Komnata Quest: Doctor Frankenstein

Come up to the lab and see what’s on the slab! We donned our brass goggles and sallied forth into the study of a mysterious, eccentric Doctor to investigate his final experiment…

Komnata Quest London

  • Location: Covent Garden (nearest Tubes Holborn, Covent Garden)
  • Players: 2 – 6
  • We played: July 2019 as a team of 2

Great things about Doctor Frankenstein:

  • This room had a strong steampunk theme with plenty of atmosphere. The decor was well-executed with a nice array of interesting props and plenty of well-employed bronze spray paint!
  • There was a decent amount to solve here, keeping the two of us busy and active. We enjoyed all the puzzles – and one large scale task in particular – although a few of them did have essentially the same methodology.
  • There was a logical structure to the room, with a clear, visual indicator that you’d got something right, which kept things pacey as we progressed towards the final moments.

On the other hand…

  • In Doctor Frankenstein it’s possible to inadvertently ‘solve’ a puzzle just by exploring and fiddling with things, which isn’t ideal as it can mean you later find yourself working towards something you’ve actually already progressed beyond.
  • Komnata use pre-recorded audio hints to guide you towards the correct solution – and, as we’ve also found elsewhere, they aren’t always relevant or helpful to what you’re actually puzzling over.
  • Although generally the theming was very good here, the incongruous, anachronistic music (Fly Me to the Moon!?) jarred for us. Spooky background music or ambient sounds would have been more effective.

Who should try this room?

Without being a particularly scary room, Doctor Frankenstein has some jumpy moments. While there are better – and better value – rooms elsewhere in London, we’d still recommend this one to groups of friends or families with 2-4 players per team.

Rating – 7/10
